I
first met Nicole and Trevor a couple of years ago when they filmed Jenna & Ross' wedding. Their work really moved me.
Nicole's films capture genuine emotions in a way that is unique to her gift of storytelling. She is passionate about weddings and about connecting with couples and telling their stories and it shows in her work.
We've developed a friendship over the last couple of years. I don't remember how the conversation started but it was decided that Nicole and Trevor would come out to Banff to visit with us and while they were here I would take a photograph of Nicole for her website. I was nervous to photograph a visual artist and Nicole was nervous about being photographed. Nicole reassured me by saying she only needed a single photograph for her website. Somehow those words set me free to feel comfortable and inspired.
As you can see here I ended up with more than a single photograph for Nicole. Our friendship inspired me.
Nicole teased me that a more accurate description for my portrait sessions should include the words "adventure photography" as we hiked into some of my favourite places in the snow.
You can read about the experience from Nicole's perspective here.
These are my favourite shoes that Nicole wears to weddings. They are worn with love.
Nicole you are beautiful. Stephanie Roy from www.stylingsteph.com in Banff did Nicole's hair and make-up for our shoot.
Nicole is a gifted storyteller. The lovely ladies at Icing Designs made a custom garland for me for our shoot. The word that always comes to mind when I think of Nicole's work is "Storyteller".
At some point in our conversations about the shoot Nicole told me that she is most comfortable in a toque. I commissioned the artist Yokoo to handmake a toque just for Nicole to wear on our shoot.
The week-end was the very first time I got to meet Nicole and Trevor's daughter. She instantly had me charmed. She has a sparkle and a sweet spirit that I loved being around. I'm sure Trevor and Nicole were really impressed with me when I suggested we head to Welsh's candy shop a Banff tradition right before what should of been bedtime.
Trevor works with Nicole on almost all of her films and he is an amazing support to her. They are a great team.
Nicole thank you for trusting me to take your photograph. I am grateful for our friendship and the inspiration it gives me.
elow are a few quick photos from my new neighbour's office am one. I love Miho's witty use of vintage men's suit jackets and silk ties in her work. Not only does Miho create her own work but she is also available for custom work and alternations.
These are perhaps my favourite pieces of Miho's. They are crafted from vintage men's suit jackets, the original pockets now acting as the perfect place to stash your cell phone. She has made them in sizes for your laptop, small clutches and I recently saw a gorgeous custom bag she made that was created specifically for an iPad.
I love these stylish small padded cases crafted from vintage silk ties that are the perfect size for your iPhone.
worked with Luke and Ryan from Imago Cinema for the very first time at Stef and Ben's wedding. Luke took the time to contact me before the wedding to ask if we could meet each other. Their desire to work with me as a team for Stef and Ben's day was apparent in that first meeting. Their unobtrustive style was such a joy to work with. We worked really well together and they made it a great experience. They were thoughtful quiet observers never interfering with the events or emotions of the day just documenting it in detail.
The day after the wedding I received a package in the mail wrapped in orange wrapping paper with a hand written really kind note from Luke and inside I found this.... no he didn't buy me a new lens. He bought me a coffee cup in the shape of my lens. I cracked up as soon as I opened it. It made my day. So hilarious.
When I saw Luke and Ryan's film highlight for Stef and Ben I was so surprised at everything they captured because they were so unobtrustive all day. They took the time to get to know Stef and Ben and it shows in their highlight. They captured their day beautifully. They worked hard in ways people will never know. Like that beautiful opening star shot involved driving all over the place trying to find a cloudless place to set up and then waiting for close to an hour while they captured the moving stars. Check it out here and be sure to leave them a comment.

The gorgeous peacock feather bouquet that Leo at Willow Haven created for me. I absolutely adored how the skirt was so luscious with peacock feathers. The details count and as Leo pointed out he's always disappointed when he sees a picture of a bride carrying her bouquet upside down as she's walking and the skirt of the bouquet has not been taken into account. I think I might be tempted to hold this bouquet upside down just to show off the skirt!
I love reds and blues together. Leo is always so creative and his work is finely crafted.
This is the Gerrard that I know best always with a big smile on his face and lots of laughs.
