The hike into Helen Lake that starts from the Icefields Parkway is one of Banff National Park's Premiere hikes. You certainly can't go wrong with this hike, the diversity of the terrain and the views will keep you moving forward in total awe at the magnificent mountains that make up the Icefields Parkway area. It is about six kilometers to the lake with a steep section at the beginning but quickly levels out into an incredible meadow that is full of wildflowers in July and August, unlike any I have ever seen before! I have hiked this trail many times and never have I seen the wildflowers so abundant as they were. If you are adventurous and have some experience in scrambling you can continue on from the lake and head up Cirque Peak that is seen from the Helen Lake shoreline. It is a bit of a lung burner but gives you views that in my opinion don't really get any better anywhere in the park. The views in every direction are as diverse as the entire Banff National Park itself. The view overlooking the Wapta Icefield is quite mesmerizing. Anytime of the hiking season is great at Helen Lake but it is particularly wonderful throughout late July and early August with the huge amount of wildflowers in bloom. Happy Hiking!
